Media Release: Healthy Great Lakes Program Launch

Media Release

The Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) is delighted to announce our new Healthy Great Lakes program. With two-year funding from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, CELA will be able to increase national and binational capacity to protect and restore the waters of the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence River Basin. CELA has hired Anastasia Lintner to lead this new program. Dr. Lintner will work part-time as CELA Special Projects Counsel while continuing her legal work with Lintner Law.

With the Healthy Great Lakes program, CELA plans to enhance the capacity of organizations working to influence water policy in Canada by:

• collaborating with organizations through an evolving binationally focused Great Lakes network;
• seeking to involve the Great Lakes – St Lawrence River community in informing government decision-making, primarily by assisting the public to exercise their rights guaranteed by Ontario’s Environmental Bill of Rights; and,
• helping Great Lakes – St Lawrence River communities use existing legal tools.

The goals of Healthy Great Lakes program are:

• Robust, holistic, well-implemented public policy aimed at CELA’s key priorities:

o eliminating or reducing toxic pollutants;
o encouraging green infrastructure adoption;
o improving water conservation and efficiency;
o protecting and restoring water quantity, including responding to water diversion proposals;
o ensuring government action is distributed equitably across Ontario’s Great Lakes Basin watersheds, both geographically and in addressing the needs of disadvantaged communities;
o engaging with First Nation and Métis communities in discussions of opportunities for action;and

• Engaged Great Lakes – St Lawrence River citizenry that makes use of available legal tools and holds government to account for the public trust.

As the program unfolds, CELA will reach out to discuss how this increased capacity can best be applied to enhance the collective work of individuals and organizations working within the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence River Basin.
