Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director and part of the Client and Community Services Team, the Legal Assistant & Information Coordinator provides support in respect of CELA’s legal services and assists with ensuring effective day-to-day operations. Responsibilities include preparing reports and correspondence, and processing and filing legal documents, including tribunal and court pleadings. The position also includes responsibility for supporting communications activities of the clinic including document formatting, posting materials to the website, and information management.
Main Duties of the Job:
- Preparing reports, correspondence, legal materials (including serving and filing documents) in relation to a variety of Courts and administrative tribunals
- Conducting intake and screening of clients, communicating with community members and clients and lawyers on the telephone, in-person and by email
- Providing information and making appropriate referrals to members of the public
- Collecting and recording data related to services to clients and community
- Ingoing and outgoing correspondence and records management through variety of media
- Database entry including clinical statistics, maintaining contact lists and publications
- Assisting with communications duties including document formatting, website support and maintenance, and distribution of communications
- Organizing and maintaining files, policies, manuals
- Scheduling and setting up meetings related to services of the clinic
Required Skills and Experience:
- Ability to effectively prioritize numerous tasks, function effectively under workload demands and adapt to changing organizational priorities
- Strong competence in computer systems including Microsoft Word, Excel, database programs, and web platforms
- Familiarity with office machines and maintenance
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, sound judgment and an appreciation for detail
- File and document management skills
- Commitment to social justice and human rights
- Effective written and oral communication skills in English
- Initiative and ability to work independently, and as part of a team
CELA values, but does not require, language capacities in addition to English, as well as lived experience relevant to environmental legal needs of equity-seeking groups. For example, CELA values persons with lived experience in local and Indigenous knowledge systems, as well as experience working with racialized, vulnerable and diverse communities who CELA serves.
CELA offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The per annum equivalent salary is $64,000, inclusive of pay equity. The position also includes enrolment in our health benefits program and an additional CELA contribution to retirement benefits. The position is unionized.
