Join our lawyers for a workshop to learn about Canada’s nuclear liability regime and how we can use the law to prevent harm to public safety and the environment.

Until May 31, 2021, Canada is soliciting feedback on whether the existing $1 billion cap on civil liability limit for nuclear reactors in the event of an accident is sufficient and if additional measures should be contemplated. Nuclear proponents are lobbying for a reduction in limits, particularly for untested and novel technologies like Small Modular Reactors.

In this workshop we will:

• Briefly review Canada’s existing nuclear liability scheme
• Compare nuclear civil liability to other energy sectors, like pipelines which have unlimited liability
• Consider lessons learned in light of Fukushima
• Review the impacts of reducing liability limits, particularly for untested and novel technologies like Small Modular Reactors
