Canada urged to support the creating of a new hazard class for endocrine disrupting substances in Global Harmonizing System

The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals has been adopted (fully or partially) by over 80 countries including Canada to provide information on toxic chemicals in the workplace. There are 3 main GHS hazard categories: Physical, Health, and Environment, along with 30 specific hazard classes including explosives, flammable gases, reproductive toxicity, germ cell mutagenicity, skin sensitization, carcinogenicity, and ozone layer depletion. Recent discussions of the GHS are exploring the need for a new hazard class for endocrine-disrupting substances, which have unique properties including impacts associated with low-dose exposure, and non-monotonic dose response. Health and Environmental non-governmental organizations globally urge support from countries like Canada to further GHS discussions on establishing a new hazard class for endocrine-disrupting substances.
