The Canadian Environmental Law Foundation, (formerly the Resource Library for the Environment and the Law) was established in 1993 and has long supported CELA’s research and educations work on environmental law and justice issues. In 2019 the Foundation formally changed its names to the Canadian Environmental Law Foundation, and increased its focus on supporting those efforts by CELA.
The Foundation sponsors CELA’s Articling program as well as law student internships and other Foundation-funded projects to retain and train junior legal counsel. This sponsorship enables CELA to train the next generation of environmental public interest lawyers.
The CELA Foundation provides extensive resources to the public, via our in-house library, (view searchable catalogue), and online hosting of projects that support the environmental law and policy community. For example, the Environmental History Program features an extensive range of online resources tracking the history of environmental law and justice in Canada.
