Casework: Proposed Mega-Landfill in Southwestern Ontario

Since 2013, CELA has represented the Oxford People Against the Landfill (OPAL) Alliance in various proceedings in relation to a large landfill being proposed in a worked-out quarry in Oxford County. Our client is concerned about the potential environmental and human health impacts of this proposed waste disposal site, particularly since nearby residents rely upon groundwater for their drinking water supply.

On behalf of OPAL, CELA is participating in the ongoing environmental assessment process for the landfill proposal. This matter has become an important test case in light of recent amendments to Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act that require landfill proponents to obtain written support from affected local municipalities.

However, in light of ongoing public and municipal opposition to the landfill proposal, the Town of Ingersoll announced in November 2021 that the proponent has decided not to pursue the landfill project at the subject property.
