Toronto, CANADA – The Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) applauded the announcement of a proposed policy by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to consider and address the cumulative impacts of air pollution in Ontario.
“We strongly support this important policy announcement,” stated Theresa McClenaghan, Executive Director, with the CELA. “We believe that this new policy is critical to address the disproportionate level of air pollution that is borne by communities in Sarnia and Hamilton.”
“The Ministry’s new policy is consistent with the measures that have been taken in other jurisdictions to address the cumulative impact of air pollution,” added Ramani Nadarajah, counsel with the CELA. We also urge the Ministry to soon extend this new policy province-wide, to include contaminants beyond benzene and benzo(a) pyrene, and to ensure it applies to both existing and new and expanding facilities.
