Toronto – The Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) is applauding news that New Brunswick’s provincial Emergency Measures Organization (NB EMO) will review its nuclear emergency response plan this summer.
In an email to CELA dated May 29, 2017 the NB EMO announced, “this summer NB EMO will be posting the Point Lepreau Nuclear Off-site Emergency Plan in the new CSA Z1600-14 Standard on our web-site for public review and comment.”
“CELA commends the NB EMO for releasing their revised emergency response plan and also looking forward to this summer’s public review,” reacts CELA executive director, Theresa McClenaghan. “We also hope that that New Brunswick will clarify the planning basis, or size of accident, on which the Point Lepreau Nuclear Off-site Emergency Plan is based.”
In response to CELA’s request for a public review of the emergency response plan, the NB EMO has provided CELA with a revised version of the emergency response plan (read Point-Lepreau-Emergency-Plan-Vol-One and Point-Lepreau-Emergency-Plan-Vol-Two). For ease of review, the NB EMO notes that the version for public review this summer will be a “standalone plan in one document.”
Some of the revisions to the plan include:
- Updates to the types and uses of ‘sheltering in place’ – a technique most frequently used following an accident
- A draft letter to be sent to parents through the schools, regarding the administration of Potassium Iodide (KI) pills
- Updates to transportation in the event of an evacuation responsive to the special needs of community members
“This is excellent news,” notes Kerrie Blaise, counsel at CELA. “We appreciate the efforts of NB EMO in providing the revised offsite plan and the opportunity for the public to review the plan. We look forward to details and will continue our involvement in recommending measures that will protect the health of the environment and communities in and around Point Lepreau.”
