May 8, 2026, TORONTO – In response to the federal government’s proposal to transfer the environmental assessment of nuclear power projects to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, the Canadian Environmental Law Association’s (CELA) Executive Director, Theresa McClenaghan said:
“This proposal puts the fox in charge of the hen house and should be withdrawn. We need independent oversight because nuclear power projects are high-risk and can cause irreversible damage to communities, human health and the environment. This attempt to short-cut environmental reviews will only undermine public trust and increase risk, which may mean this proposal will sabotage the government’s objective of getting projects built in the first place.”
