CELA Submission on Algoma Steel’s Site-Wide Environmental Compliance Approval

CELA has made submissions to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks in response to Algoma Steel Inc.’s proposal for a new site-wide Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) for air and noise for its Sault Ste. Marie facility (Environmental Registry Posting #019-9084). The new ECA would apply to the facility for the current period, the transition period, and for the future period where the facility will operate with electric arc furnaces.

CELA seeks further disclosure of information on the proposal to ensure that the public can meaningfully engage.

It’s critical that the impacts of air emissions are considered during the current and transition periods and that measures are taken to protect human health and the environment. Decisions about significant environmental proposals should prioritize input from the impacted communities and consider the health impacts on communities disproportionately impacted by pollution.
