Fact Sheet: How to better safeguard your private well or surface water intake

Within Ontario’s source protection regions, municipalities have strong powers that allow them to identify, monitor and manage activities that could pose a risk to their source water quality in the years or even decades to come.

This fact sheet outlines how certain groups of private drinking water wells or surface water intakes may be eligible to receive the same legal protections by requesting to be included in an existing source protection plan.

It is designed to give an overview of the importance of source water protection, how inclusion in a source protection plan could impact you, and what steps communities can take to pursue better safeguards for their drinking water.

The fact sheet is available below, and is also available on the Canadian Environmental Law Archive website; click here to open it in a new tab.

This resource will be made available in French soon.
