Today CELA salutes our specialty clinic colleagues at the Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario (ACTO) and the Right To Housing (R2H) Coalition for more than a decade of hard work in achieving a National Housing Strategy.
Bill C-97, Division 19 of which contains the National Housing Strategy Act, received Royal Assent today. This law is the culmination of many years of hard work within the right to housing movement across Canada that demanded the creation of a National Housing Strategy and the recognition of the right to housing in law.
The work was achieved through years of systemic advocacy on the grassroots level. Millions of people in Canada can now hold their government accountable for addressing their housing needs. Read the statement from ACTO and the Right to Housing Coalition.
As Kenn Hale, ACTO’s Director of Advocacy and Legal Services states, “this is a victory for every single vulnerable person living in Canada.”
