I’m an Ontarian, and I deserve world-class nuclear emergency plans.
This summer — six years after Fukushima — the Ontario government finally gave in to public pressure and held a public consultation on the adequacy of its nuclear emergency response plans.
With half of Ontarians living near an aging nuclear reactor, the Ontario government didn’t want to admit they’re not prepared to protect us in the event of a Fukushima-type accident. Not to mention that the nuclear lobby has been fighting tooth and nail to keep the issue under wraps.
During the consultations, over a thousand Ontarians called for world-class nuclear emergency plans to protect them and their loved ones. Meanwhile, bureaucrats at the Ministry of Community Safety have told Minister Lalonde to maintain the status quo.
Before the end of the year, the government will make a decision that impacts us all. Will they prioritize public safety and strengthen nuclear emergency response plans? Or will they side with industry and leave us vulnerable in the event of a major nuclear accident?
Now’s not the time to let up on the pressure — it’s time to double down. Please send a message to your MPP now, and ask them to stand for you and your loved ones’ safety.
