Under the Municipal Act, municipalities in Ontario have the jurisdiction to pass a by-law requiring the construction of green roofs. This report discusses the economic and environmental benefits of green roofs including dampening the urban heat island effect, reducing air pollution, and reducing energy usage. Further, this report contains a model green roof by-law and outlines the relevant Ontario Building Code requirements. Finally, it provides other additional recommendations for green roof implementation.
