Municipalities & Climate Emergency Declaration Movement

Presentation prepared by Michelle LaFortune, legal summer student at CELA, in August 2020.

Michelle has spent her summer at CELA following up on the Climate Emergency Declaration Movement. Starting in 2019, municipalities across Canada (and around the world) declared climate emergencies, an action undertaken to acknowledge the climate crisis and to commit to considering the environment in all local decision making. This presentation is a call for local governments to be leaders in the fight against climate change and to ensure that climate policies consider the disproportionate impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations.
